Ok, so, here are my thoughts on Ulitzer... As a blogger, I focus on traffic and I spend quite a lot of time optimizing my SEO. Since the target audience of my articles is much greater than the reach of my blog, Ulitzer is actually helping me increase my content reach. Moreover, Ulitzer does it in a very fair way since links back to my posts or other locations are without the evil "nofollow" - providing a nice SEO boost. It also gives me some good metrics that are very useful data points on the effectiveness of my blog articles. And last but not least, it allows my article to appears in the news listings of the two major search engines, which is a very nice channel extension. So, all of this means that, while Ulitzer might be seen as a competing channel to bloggers, I think that bloggers should realize the tremendous value it could bring to their blog. I think to mater... Confessions of a Ulitzer Addict

John Funnel on Ulitzer Earlier this year one of my staff attended a SYS-CON event and returned to the office a different person. Revitalised and motivated. I asked her what happened at the event to warrant such a transformation? What was her secret? Was it the New York Shopping experience? A business Romance or was it Devine intervention? She simply advised me to ‘check out Ulitzer. – Everyone who is anyone is on it’. She was not the first to introduce me to the innovation. Many of my peers had gone through such noticeable changes, It was like a weight had been lifted from their shoulders, that they now had a true portal to vent out their innermost thoughts. I was instantly intrigued by such recommendations. People, just like me, were using Ulitzer everywhere. So what had I been fighting against all this time? What was I avoiding? Eventually I succumbed to the in... (more)

Ulitzer vs. Ning - a Quick Review

Having used both sites for about two weeks, there is still a great deal I am learning to do with both Ulitzer and Ning, but a reader asked if I would do a quick comparison, so I will. The obvious point for me is that the sites have two different objectives for the writers.  For Ning, the writer is trying to be involved in a niche social network from scratch.  For example, I have built my own social network for marketers and salespeople called BuyerSteps.  I created BuyerSteps as a way for other professionals to join in a conversation around the 21st century buyer.  So, Ning represents a way to build a community. In the case of Ulitzer, as a writer I am focused on getting readers from within an existing audience.  There are already thousands of readers coming to the Ulitzer site, so if they are interested in my topics such as marketing, they will find my articles as ... The Secret Behind The Incredible Growth of Cloud Expo

A few minutes ago I received an email questionnaire informing me that "The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) has once again partnered with George P. Johnson Experience Marketing to conduct this essential and timely research. This year's study is being co-produced with The Jordan Edmiston Group, Inc. and with support from the Event Marketing Institute." The first question of this survey is: Which one of the following best describes the role of "digital marketing" when you are planning an event? a)      A leading tactic b)      A vital component of the plan c)       Taken under consideration with other mediums d)      Usually an afterthought e)      Don't really consider it I was shocked to see this question and equally shocked to read the selection of possible answers! First, allow me to present the facts, which reflect the reality of the media business in... (more)

Google's Knol vs Ulitzer

Despite Google's $159 billion market cap - or rather, one suspects, because of it - Jimmy Wales, the guy who created - for better or worse - Wikipedia, figures Internet search is broken - because it's proprietary - and needs to be reinvented, freeing "the judgment of information from invisible rules inside an algorithmic black box."  (Odd, he questions the biases of algorithms more than Wikipedia articles. Hmmm.) This was the news story late this summer that summarized Jimmy Wales mega aspirations to directly compete with Google. Anyway, back in the beginning of 2007 he set up a LAMP-based project called Search Wikia to build a new for-profit search platform out of open source search protocols - like the open source Lucene search engine widgetry - and Wikipedia-like human collaboration. Later, he acquired the Grub web crawler - dusty shelf-ware for the last few years ... (more)

Microsoft Starts Distributing Drupal

Today, Matt Asay, general manager of the Americas and vice president of business development at Alfresco, in his CNET blog, writes: “The single biggest distributor of Drupal just might be Microsoft. As I discovered from Dries Buytaert's blog yesterday, Microsoft's Web Application Installer comes with out-of-the-box support for Drupal, OScommerce, and other popular open-source web applications.” This Google alert for Drupal passed by my screen just as I was about to announce that the SYS-CON Media website, recently relaunched, was completely rewritten and deployed “under the hood” on Drupal. Also coming up before the end of this year is Ulitzer, the largest Drupal deployment anywhere. Ulitzer is being built on Drupal with more than two million nodes, including more than 6,000 author home pages leading to over a million original articles. Page views of Ulitzer followin... (more)
