When I landed in Athens, Greece, on Sunday, October 13, 2007, the last thing on my mind was writing a blog entry about high-tech public relations, until I heard from a PR agent on the day of my arrival. In the past 10 days or so we have been working with her on a breaking news story that is currently under NDA. I was so impressed with her professionalism and her passion for perfection that yesterday I posted a blog entry, recommending the agency she works for, to technology companies that are searching for a highly qualified public relations firm. Within minutes of my blog entry, I received the strangest email notification, alerting me to another blog written by Alan Zeichick, "co-founder and editorial director of BZ Media, which publishes SD Times and Software Test & Performance, and which also produces the Software Security Summit, Software Test & Performance Conf... Innovate with SOA - I

This article originally appeared in NOW Magazine, which retains all rights. A commitment to innovation in any organization can be stymied by the day-to-day reality—and resulting ennui—of accomplishing the basic work done that has to be done. Within IT organizations, for example, it’s generally accepted wisdom that a very high percentage of resources and budget are dedicated to maintenance and support, to ongoing operations, rather than to nurturing innovation. The well-known 80/20 rule applies here—not only do 20 percent of customers typically drive 80 percent of sales, but 80 percent of resources are deployed to cover routine tasks. (The original usage of this shorthand, by the way, was by an Italian economist, Vilfredo Pareto, who used it to describe unequal distribution of wealth in Italian society in the late 1800s.) A slightly altered ratio has become popular i... (more)

Ulitzer vs. Ning - a Quick Review

Having used both sites for about two weeks, there is still a great deal I am learning to do with both Ulitzer and Ning, but a reader asked if I would do a quick comparison, so I will. The obvious point for me is that the sites have two different objectives for the writers.  For Ning, the writer is trying to be involved in a niche social network from scratch.  For example, I have built my own social network for marketers and salespeople called BuyerSteps.  I created BuyerSteps as a way for other professionals to join in a conversation around the 21st century buyer.  So, Ning represents a way to build a community. In the case of Ulitzer, as a writer I am focused on getting readers from within an existing audience.  There are already thousands of readers coming to the Ulitzer site, so if they are interested in my topics such as marketing, they will find my articles as ...
