Data Modeling in the SOA Age

Once upon a time data modeling played a central role in the process of developing applications

SYS-CON Events announced today that more than 40 Cloud technology providers, as well as Virtualization and SOA companies will exhibit at the upcoming 1st International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo (www.CloudComputingExpo.com), November 19-21, in San Jose, California. The conference will be colocated with SYS-CON's 4th International Virtualization Conference & Expo (www.VirtualizationConference.com).

Once upon a time data modeling played a central role in the process of developing applications. Thus far in the SOA era, there has been a heavy emphasis on process, and data has all-too-often been lost in the SOA shuffle. In this session, Mike Carey presents a data model for SOA - i.e., a service-oriented data model. This model formalizes the notion of a data service, modeling data in SOA as a layer of interrelated data services.

The session will explain the key components of this model, including a taxonomy of data service operation types, a mechanism for capturing the entities that the data services are "about", and an approach to modeling relationships in SOA. The content of this session is based on the data services model embodied in the BEA AquaLogic Data Services Platform (ALDSP), now known as Oracle Data Services Integrator, and the approach is based on lessons learned over a period of several years of working with data services and customer use cases.

Speaker Bio:
Dr Michael Carey is a Bren Professor of Computer & Information Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. Carey, a National Academy of Engineering member, has worked in both industry and academia over the course of his career. He is a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and was the 2005 recipient of the association's SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award.

Dr. Carey was previously Senior Engineering Director for BEA Systems (later Oracle), where he was chief architect for the AquaLogic Data Services Platform product. Prior to joining BEA, he lead the data team at Propel Software, an e-commerce infrastructure software startup. Dr Carey spent five years as an IBM Almaden database researcher and research manager. Prior to that, he spent a dozen years on the University of Wisconsin-Madison computer science faculty. He is a past recipient of the ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award and has co-authored over one hundred conference and journal articles on topics related to database management systems and middleware and has extensive experience speaking at technical conferences.

Free Cloud Computing Bootcamp on Nov 20, 2008, in San Jose, CA
1st International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo will offer a free "Cloud Computing Bootcamp" (http://cloudbootcamp.sys-con.com) on the second day of the conference, Thursday, November 20, 2008. Cloud computing is an opportunity for business to implement low cost, low power and high efficiency systems to deliver scalable infrastructure. But moving to a cloud infrastructure is not necessarily as nice and clean as the providers would want us to think. With cloud infrastructures problems don't magically go away, they just shift: you don't have scalability or storage problems any more, but you need constantly monitor the cloud and your application in it. In this compelling, intensive, one-day, hands-on training program, you will learn what it takes to take advantage of the Cloud - and whether it is right for you in the first place.
